Visa to Slovakia

Slovakia is one of the countries that have signed the Schengen Agreement. A visa-free regime between Ukraine and the European Union came into force in 2017, so Ukrainians with biometric passports do not need a visa to enter Slovakia. Having entered the country without a visa, Ukrainians can stay on its territory for 90 days per 6 months.

The citizens of countries with a visa regime with Slovakia – Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus – must obtain a visa D before arriving in the country. This visa gives the right to apply for a residence permit in Slovakia.

To obtain a visa, you need to sign up for filing documents at the Slovakian embassy, state submitting documents for a residence permit as the purpose of getting a visa, and prepare the entire set of papers for receiving a residence permit.

Our experts will advise and provide comprehensive support in the process of receiving a visa to Slovakia for citizens of countries with a visa regime.

Different options can be legal grounds for moving to Slovakia:

– you are going to the country for the purpose of studying (this can be either studying at a university or taking training language courses);

If the aim of immigration is education, then a weighty argument for moving will be the fact that with an international diploma from a Slovak university, there is a chance to find a job not only in Slovakia but also in other EU countries. Obtaining a residence permit by citizens of countries with a visa regime

All foreigners who want to move to live in Slovakia face the procedure for obtaining a residence permit (temporary residence permit).

A temporary residence permit can be obtained for different purposes. This could be:

  • entrepreneurial activity
  • employment
  • studying
  • research activities.

An application for a residence permit in Slovakia can be submitted by both visa-free foreigners and residents of those countries for which a visa is required to enter Slovak territory.

A mandatory requirement for obtaining a residence permit in Slovakia is the confirmation of no criminal record for all persons over 14 years of age.

It is also mandatory to provide confirmation of the presence of the minimum allowed amount in the bank account. According to the law of Slovakia “On Residence of Foreigners”, a residence permit can be obtained by someone who confirms his financial status with certificates of the availability of funds in two accounts: personal and business.

  1. Personal account

The personal account must contain an amount based on at least a monthly subsistence rate for each month of residence for each adult and half of the subsistence rate for each child. At the same time, a personal account can be opened both in Slovakia and abroad.

  1. Business account

With a business account, several options are possible.

2.1. If you register as a private entrepreneur (živnostník, podnikateľ), then the amount on the account must be not less than 20 subsistence rates.

2.2. If you register an LLC (SRO), then the account must have an amount of at least 100 subsistence rates.

If the purpose of immigration to Slovakia is employment, then in order to obtain a residence permit, you must provide an official invitation to work. First, it is important to find an employer who is ready to provide you with a job and officially confirm this with a document. If you decide to apply first for a residence permit for the purpose of employment, and then to look for an employer, in this case, such an application will be refused.

Our specialists will provide complete information regarding the documents that need to be prepared for obtaining a residence permit in each individual case, as well as full support when obtaining a permit.

Obtaining a residence permit by citizens of countries with a visa regime

Both visa-free foreigners and citizens of countries for which there is a visa regime for entry to Slovakia can apply for a residence permit. Visa foreigners – citizens of Russia, the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan – must first apply for a Slovak visa.

Differences in obtaining a residence permit for citizens with a visa-free and visa regime are small. So, if citizens with a visa-free regime of entry apply for a residence permit at the Slovak police, then visa foreigners can do this at the Slovak consulate of their country.

The second option is that citizens with a visa regime of entry can apply for a national visa D. Having received a national visa, they can come to the country and, already on its territory, apply to the foreign police of Slovakia for a residence permit with a national visa.

Visa D is issued by the consulate of Slovakia in the applicant’s country of residence. The basis for obtaining it can be:

  • a company incorporated in Slovakia, or the opening of an individual entrepreneur
  • buying or renting real estate in Slovakia.

Starting a business is one of the popular forms of immigration to Slovakia since it provides an opportunity to obtain a residence permit from one of the EU countries with the possibility of doing business and unlimited stay in the EU. The prices for obtaining a residence permit for business in Slovakia are small compared to other EU countries. One more advantage of business immigration is the possibility to obtain a residence permit for the family members of the main applicant.
