Extension of a residence permit in Slovakia is a necessary procedure for everyone who previously received a temporary residence permit.

The deadline for a residence permit is specified in the decision of the Immigration Police. It should not be confused with the validity period of the ID card, which may be less than the total period of the granted residence permit.

A set of documents is submitted for the extension of a residence permit, including:

• an official extract from the Commercial Register for persons with a residence permit as an entrepreneur

• a confirmation from a Slovak bank that the account has the minimum allowed amount of funds

• confirmation that there are no debts to social insurance, tax inspection, health insurance, and customs

• a valid health insurance certificate

• a document confirming the residency registration in Slovakia. All certificates and supporting documents must be prepared no earlier than 90 days before the submission of documents for the extension of a residence permit. The renewal procedure should be taken seriously, despite the fact that it is much easier than obtaining the first residence permit.

Frequently asked questions

If you need to extend your residence permit, how long do you need to stay in the country without leaving it?

You do not need to stay in the country uninterruptedly for a successful extension of a residence permit. It is enough to stay in Slovakia for 183 days within a year.

What documents are required for a residence permit?

Depending on the purpose stated for obtaining a residence permit, you are required to submit the following documents: - "business" - a valid international passport, a criminal record statement with an apostille, funds to be deposited into the accounts of a company / individual entrepreneur and your personal account; - "family reunion" - a valid international passport, a criminal record statement with an apostille (for persons aged 14 and over), a marriage certificate (husband/wife), a birth certificate (for children under 18 years), funds to be deposited in the sponsor's account; - "employment" - a valid international passport, a criminal record statement with an apostille, information about the employer, a diploma; - "study" - a valid international passport, a criminal record statement with an apostille, confirmation from the university of admission for the full-time study.   We will prepare all other documents ourselves.

What may be the reasons for refusing to obtain or extend a residence permit?

Problems with documents, an incomplete package of documents, situations when a client has legal problems or does not follow our instructions.

Can I be refused to extend a residence permit?

Yes, but this has not happened to our clients yet.

How to duly translate documents into the Slovak language?

It all depends on the type of documents and the agreement concluded by your country. Certification of translation is not required for countries that are state parties to the Hague Convention. This means that in order to use abroad documents issued in such a country, you only need to apostille them.   Apostilled documents must not only be translated into Slovak but the translation must be made by a sworn translator and bound to a notarized copy of the document. Such translators are located in Slovakia.   Our specialists will provide full translation services in Slovakia.

Where to go to process the documents?

When processing the documents, we accompany you to the Foreign Police Department to submit the application in person.   You can also submit the application in person at the Foreign Police Department at your place of residence if: - you are in Slovakia on the basis of a valid temporary residence permit; - you are in Slovakia on the basis of a valid national visa; - you do not need a visa to stay in Slovakia; - you are the holder of a Certificate of a Slovak living abroad; - you have been granted tolerated residence (acc. to Paragraph 58 section 1, points a-c or section 2)   If you are not in Slovakia, the application is submitted to the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in your country. At the embassy, you have a personal interview for the purpose of a preliminary assessment of the application.

Is it obligatory to come in person to submit documents?

Personal presence is required by law.

How to obtain residence permits for the whole family?

It is necessary to determine who will be a sponsor, a mother or a father, and choose a suitable purpose for this person (see question № 3). Other family members will apply for a family reunion.

If a foreign citizen has purchased real estate, can this be a basis for obtaining a residence permit, permanent residence, or Slovak citizenship?

Purchase of real estate in Slovakia is not a basis for obtaining a residence permit or permanent residence in Slovakia.   The Foreign Police Department of Slovakia grants permits for temporary residence not on the basis of something, but for a specific purpose.   A residence permit in Slovakia can be obtained for the following purposes: - business; - employment; - study; - family reunion; - EU blue card; - civilian units of the armed forces; - special activities; - research and development; - status of a Slovak Living Abroad.

How soon can I apply for citizenship?

Possession of permanent residence for 5 years or 10 years residence in the country.
