Apostille of documents

Legalization of documents to be submitted in the Slovak Republic, affixing apostille seal.

Apostille is an internationally accepted method of certifying documents with the indication of specific information that confirms the legality of the document. The apostille stamp can be affixed to the originals of documents or copies and indicates their full legality. Certification of documents by apostille is necessary if they are used on the territory of another state.

Apostille is recognized only in the countries participating in The Hague Convention of 1961. Slovakia is one of them.

In Slovakia, apostille is affixed to the following documents:

  •     educational documents (certificates, diplomas, certificates of academic degree)
  •     various documents issued by judicial authorities and notaries (court decisions, birth/ marriage/divorce certificates, certificates of marital status, real estate, certificates from the place of work, etc.).

Apostille is affixed to foreign documents only in the country where this document was issued.

In the Republic of Slovakia, the following organizations have the right to affix an apostille:

  •     Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Slovakia – apostille of notarial documents;
  •     Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic – apostille is affixed in Bratislava to educational documents;

●     Ministry of Foreign Affairs – notarization of a police clearance certificate.
